Holistic wellness – a journey to wholeness

Plato, the Greek philosopher, once said, “the part can never be well unless the whole is well”. It sums up the core value of holistic wellness. Beyond just the absence of disease, striving for holistic wellness is an approach to life, with an ultimate goal to thrive physically, emotionally and spiritually.

The 8 pillars of holistic wellness
The wellbeing of the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual are integrated and inseparable. It’s only when the eight pillars of wellness are in homeostasis can one live a balanced life that thrives.

1. Physical Wellness
Your body is your vehicle in this life. Treat it well with proper nutrition and adequate levels of exercise. While you might be a dedicated gym-goer who enjoys working up a sweat and pushing your limits on a daily basis, make sure you do it right. Correct posture and form are everything. There might be a lot of gym addicts who are dedicated to training, but not everyone does it mindfully. Stay conscious, engage the mind and your body, and focus on the muscle groups being trained during each set. With the help of a professional trainer, you can work out hard and smart and take your training to the next level.

2. Mental Wellness
Be in touch with your inner self to seek comfort in your own presence with your own thoughts. Being able to observe your feelings without judgment is important in staying emotionally healthy. Stay present by practicing meditation is a great way to regulate your emotions. For beginners, it could be hard to quiet the perpetual and compulsive chatter in the head. Therefore, mindfulness classes guided by experienced meditation facilitators are a great option for those who are new to meditation but want to explore the benefits of this great practice.

3. Emotional Wellness
Mental and emotional wellness go hand in hand. As we practice mindfulness and sit quietly in meditation, alone with our thoughts and feelings, we become more and more comfortable with our memories and fears as we allow ourselves to feel arising emotions. There are many sacred arts practices, such as sound healing and breathwork, that can help you move and shift through some of these emotional blockages.

4. Spiritual Wellness
Everyone has a different interpretation of spiritual wellness, based on an individual’s values, ethics and morals. Finding out what it means to you could help you find your sense of purpose in life. With the help of holistic sacred arts that involve movement, creative expression and self-awareness in the form of yoga, mindfulness, tea ceremony, sound healing and dance, you can reconnect with your authentic self, and open your body and mind to newfound trust, freedom and joy.

5. Social Wellness
Social wellness is about having healthy relationships with friends and loved ones. It’s only when we are able to give and receive love that we can truly bond with the world and feel grounded. No matter how hectic life is, it’s important to spend quality time with the people we care about. Instead of meeting your friends for Happy Hour, bond with them by gymming, taking a wellness class, or enjoying a healthy and nourishing meal together.

6. Work Wellness
Find a job you love and you will never work a day in your life. For many of us, a large portion of our day is spent at work. Therefore, you must make sure that you enjoy what you do during those eight to ten hours every day. Feeling a sense of accomplishment and pride in what you do is essential to your overall wellbeing.

7. Financial Wellness
You don’t have to be wealthy to be happy. Finding a sense of security by having a steady income at the end of each month can give you stability and comfort, putting your mind at ease. Society constantly wants us to work more and earn more, but sometimes taking a step back and giving yourself that much needed “me” time is vital in creating wellbeing within your life. Don’t forget to strive for work-life balance.

8. Environmental Wellness
It’s been proven that outdoor immersion and connecting with nature helps lower stress and anxiety. Dealing with stress is an unavoidable part of our modern, hectic and fast-paced lifestyle. To stay refreshed for new journeys ahead, reward yourself with a nature escape to recharge the mind. Getting involved in nature conservation, where you actively take part in making the planet a better place, can also bring great rewards and a sense of achievement and contentment. Try to preserve the beauty Mother Nature has to offer you, and let nature heal you.
